MTH is now producing a select range of HO scale models of the finest locomotives from America's steam era
So far MTH has produced its intial HO offering, the Pennsylvania K4 with both pre and post-war details and lettering. The models are equipped with Protosound 3 and may be controlled with either a conventional 12-16v dc transformer-controller, a DCC controller or MTH's highly regarded DCS system. (video)
Scheduled for production in 2008 is a more interesting prototype, the Erie triplex. The dealer list mentions seven production variants. Locomotives number 5014, 5015 and 5016 can each be ordered with either the blue "Russian Iron" boiler cladding or a plain black version. The odd one out is a black variant numbered as for the Virginian 700, but obviously this is not a scale representation of the actual Virginian triplex. One slight shame is that only the later, higher sided, tender design is proposed whereas most of the surviving photographs show the scalloped profile, as depicted for the gauge 1 70-3022-1.
Personally I think the triplex is a much more interesting idea to grandstand MTH's production and electro-mechanical expertise and, whilst not every HO aficionado may desire one to the extent of buying it we can pretty much guarantee that it will be a talking point within the arena of HO railroading. Going through the higher fidelity Premier section of the O gauge catalog(ue) raises some interesting prospects in that MTH obviously has the cad-cam information for the UP 9000 series, CP Royal Hudsons, USRA switchers, Shays, Northerns and all the rest. It seems to me that with a bit of extra attention to detail regarding final scale dimensions and mechanisms any of these could be both scaled up to gauge 1 and/or shrunk down to HO
