With the Pennsylvania K4, Erie Triplex, SP GS-4, NYC Mohawk, USRA Mikado already on the shelves and with the N&W J class and the Union Pacific type now released it would appear that MTH really have geared up to show what they can do in HO gauge. These protosound 3 locomotives can be operated either by a conventional analog controller or digitally using MTH's DCS system or a generic DCC unit. Even under analog power directional lighting, synchronised smoke and sound will be operational. More features become controllable with DCC (depending on the codes the particular DCC controller can issue) and with DCS you get control over all features, lights, smoke, bell, a quillable whistle and other sound effects. As yet, unlike the diesels, the steam locomotives are not supplied with powered couplers. MTH is working on this, the decoder boards do have an output for this allowing the possibility if you are keen to experiment. Please note that MTH have managed a tweak that allows the 4-12-2 to be changed from a prototypical "rigid" wheelbase (which requires a 42" minimum radius) to an "articulated" mode (which will cope with 22" radius).
